Check a license in California

The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) licenses contractors statewide, and home improvement work valued at $500 or more must be done by a CSLB licensee. State law also caps the down payment on home improvement jobs.

California homeowner FAQ

How do I check a contractor's license in California?

Use the CSLB Check a License tool on cslb.ca.gov. It shows license status, classifications, bond and workers' comp information, and any disciplinary actions.

How much can a contractor ask for as a down payment?

For home improvement jobs, the down payment cannot be more than 10 percent of the contract price or $1,000, whichever is less. Later payments should not get ahead of the work actually done.

Do small jobs need a licensed contractor?

Any home improvement work valued at $500 or more, including labor and materials, must be done by a CSLB-licensed contractor. Handymen can only take jobs under that amount without a license.

How can I prepare my home for wildfire season?

Clear dead vegetation, clean leaves from gutters and roofs, and consider ember-resistant vents and Class A roofing. A landscaper can help create defensible space around the house.

When should I service my AC in California?

In hot inland areas, schedule an AC tune-up in spring before heat waves. Coastal homes may run AC less, but heat pumps and furnaces still need yearly service.
