New Jersey homeowner FAQ
How do I check a home improvement contractor in New Jersey?
Look up the contractor on the Division of Consumer Affairs license verification site. Registered contractors must show their registration number on contracts and ads.
Does a New Jersey home improvement contract have to be in writing?
Yes, for work over $500. The contract must list the contractor's legal name, address and registration number, and be signed by both of you.
Can I cancel a home improvement contract in New Jersey?
Yes. Home improvement contracts must include a three-day cancellation right, and you should cancel in writing. The contractor must refund your money within 30 days of getting the notice.
How should Shore homeowners prepare for storms?
Have roofs and flashing checked before hurricane season, and talk to a plumber about sump pumps or backflow valves for flood-prone basements.
When should I service my heating system?
Schedule furnace or boiler service in early fall. New Jersey winters are cold enough that a no-heat call in January is common.
